Provisional GCSE Exam Results: Summer 2018

The students of Wolverley CE Secondary School have once again improved their GCSE performance with the school’s best ever GCSE results.  Bryn Thomas, Headteacher said, “We are delighted that the number of students gaining a 9–5 grade in English and maths tops last year’s achievement by 5%. One of our top performing subjects is English with 83% of students passing and nearly a third of them achieving the top grades of 9-7.  Science results were also strong with almost half of the students achieving a 9-7 grade in Biology.  The school is improving year on year due to the effort and ambition of students and staff.  I am very proud indeed.”

There were some stunning individual performances with the following students all achieving an average grade of 7 or above:

George Parish: 3 grade 9s, 4 grade 8s, 3 grade 7s and 2 As
Lauren Tye: 1 grade 9, 4 grade 8s, 5 grade 7s
Chloe Davis: 2 grade 8s, 1A*, 7 grade 7s and 1 grade A
Jemma Cuthbert: 1 grade 9, 2 grade 8s, 5 grade 7s and 1 grade A

We are celebrating our best ever post-16 exam results, with students who applied to further education, securing their places.

Our A-level results have significantly improved, with 42% of all grades being A* to B, with last year's results hitting 17.6%.

As well as this 77.4% of grades were A* to C, compared to last year’s 50%.

BTEC Level 3 results were also a "major achievement" for the school as 52.6% of all grades were Distinction* to Distinction, whilst 89.4% of grades were Distinction* to Merit.

Headteacher Bryn Thomas said: "The Staff at Wolverley CE Secondary School send huge congratulations to all of our sixth form students who have worked incredibly hard.

"We are delighted that all those intending to go to University have secured a place, whilst those choosing not to go have secured employment or further education opportunities.

"We wish them all the very best of luck for the future.

A special mention must go to Holly, one of the first students to open her results, who was "exhilarated" with the grades she had earned. She received an A* in English, as well as B grades in Maths and Biology, which will see her study Linguistics and English at the University of Bangor.

Alice was overwhelmed with her results upon opening them, and was pleasantly surprised with her A* in English, to go along with A and C grade she achieved in other subjects.

She will now go on to study an English and History joint honors degree at the University of Birmingham next term

Progress 8 Explained

Progress 8 is a new measure of secondary school performance. It replaces the previous measure of the percentage of pupils that achieved 5 A*-C including English and Maths GCSE. It shows how well pupils of all abilities have progressed, compared to pupils with similar academic starting points in other schools.
