Department Vision 

Our English curriculum at Wolverley CE Secondary School aims to nurture, and foster, an appreciation of the beauty and wonder of language and literature, encompassing the values of great works and a critical understanding of the ways in which literary texts are a reflection of, and exploration of, the human condition. This includes themes such as love, compassion, justice, and freedom which traverse time and culture, allowing students to flourish as both individuals and as part of the wider community.

The English department offer diverse opportunities for students to study how people communicate their ideas about the world, and how readers might respond to these perspectives. Importantly, students are also enabled to develop their own voice and are empowered to communicate and empathise with authors, characters, and settings. 

We enable students, in all their uniqueness, to fulfil their ambition unlimited through exploring how life, in all its fulness, is presented in literature, and how language can bring a great source of hope and encouragement where it might be needed. 

Subject Information 

The English department at Wolverley CE Secondary School aims to support student progress for each individual.

It is our aim to help students develop a lifelong love of reading through diverse and inspiring English lessons.

In addition, we aim to help all pupils develop key analytical and critical thinking skills through thought-provoking schemes of work. 

Pupils have the chance to study the traditional literature of Dickens and Shakespeare throughout KS3 and KS4, alongside diverse modern texts including novels like Northern Lights and Mandela’s gripping autobiography Long Walk to Freedom.

Through this rich variety of stimulating texts, pupils are challenged to discuss issues relevant to modern society. In this way, we aim to raise pupils’ cultural capital and give them the opportunity to understand their place within a rapidly changing world.

In lessons we offer all pupils opportunities to develop key oracy skills through speaking and listening tasks, including discussion and presentation.

At the end of their journey in English, we wish for all pupils to have gained or exceeded their GCSE target levels. 

Furthermore, we hope that the key analytical and oracy skills developed with us will help all pupils reach their potential within their chosen career.
