Department Vision

In Physical Education, our students embody the school’s Christian vision.  Within our framework, students have the opportunity to demonstrate sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork and respect, alongside having the freedom to make decisions and receiving instant feedback to review the impact of those decisions.  Students can discover the importance of understanding and following the rules within the various sports covered in our holistic curriculum.  We pride ourselves in enabling our students to explore their love for sport and ultimately find a life-long activity that will fuel their ability to achieve their ambitions and live a healthy lifestyle. Through a consistent supportive environment within an extensive curricular and extracurricular programme, our students have the opportunity to unearth and develop their unique talents and flourish, both here at Wolverley and beyond.

KS3

Ambition Unlimited and inclusion is at the forefront of teaching in all PE lessons.  Every student in KS3 receives four lessons of physical activity per fortnight, including one lesson of dance.  The bespoke curriculum outline runs inline with the competition calendar to foster enthusiasm and encourage participation at extra curricular clubs to ensure that students receive high quality teaching within lessons and can then use these skills to represent the school at a district and county level.  School to club links are promoted within school and at Wyre Forest School Sports Partnership events.

The programme for KS3 is structured to build upon the required core skills, progressing to advanced skills and are all experienced through isolated, conditioned and game situations.  Students are split into gender groups and also into higher and lower differentiated fluid groups.  The curriculum outline is adapted to meet the needs of the individuals within these groups.

Leadership within KS3 is seamlessly involved within lessons.  In year 8, students embark on a leadership module and throughout KS3 students lead warm ups, umpire games and provide specific feedback to improve their own performance and that of their peers.

As well as traditional sports, fitness is also embedded into the curriculum at both KS3 and KS4.  At KS3, three theory tests are completed every year.  The tests are focused upon key terminology and learning at GCSE and cover areas such as fitness components, health, muscles, bones and the importance of exercise.   The tests not only assess learning but prepare students for the theory terminology they experience in KS4 when choosing an exam course.

Students are provided with the opportunity to experience the world of sport through a variety of trips organised by the PE department every year.  Students are invited to attend professional sports matches, trips to Worcester University and training grounds.

KS4

At KS4, students receive five hours of GCSE or BTEC sport per fortnight.  Many students choose PE at KS4.  Students’ practical ability as well as their English and Science predicted grades ensure that they are placed on the correct course by the teachers.

Students study the OCR GCSE specification and are taught both the theory and practical lessons alongside each other.  The curriculum outline is created with the competition and moderation calendar at the forefront allowing students to be taught and then assessed against their peers in competitive situations, in line with the GCSE specification.

BTEC Sport Level 2 is taught in units across the two years and is delivered in a way that all students have the opportunity to produce high quality work and achieve distinction grades.

KS5

At Key stage 5, students have the opportunity to study Physical Education further through a BTEC Foundation Diploma in Sport. Students receive 9 taught hours of BTEC Sport every fortnight.

During this time, students will study 5 coursework based units and 2 exams. The Unit 1 exam covers the body systems and is an extension to the BTEC and GCSE courses taught at KS4. The unit 2 exam is a set task where students will examine and interpret the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle and provide recommendations for the future.

The other units are focused on leadership, career choices in sport and fitness testing. The BTEC Foundation Diploma in Sport is equivalent to 1.5 A levels and can lead directly onto many university courses such as teaching, coaching, management or within the leisure industry.
